HISTORY

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church was the third Episcopal church established in Lubbock, following St. Paul’s on the Plains and St. Christopher’s. A mission church of the parish of St. Paul’s on the Plains, St. Stephen’s was originally established as the “high church expression in Lubbock.” In 1958, a recycled World War II army barracks was brought in to serve as worship space, office, Sunday school area, and nursery. On March 26, 1960, the mission was officially established and on July 15, 1962, ground was broken for the church’s new building. The structure, which has been renovated over the years, was designed in a contemporary Spanish colonial style with thick walls and buttresses, high clerestory windows, and colorful tile trim.  The Rt. Reverend George Quarterman, Bishop of the Diocese of Northwest Texas, dedicated the church building on May 12, 1963.

St. Stephen’s is called to be a community of support and encouragement where we discover who we are in Christ by extending faith, love, and hope to others.

We invite you to experience God's love with us!
